Lightning Strikes 06/06/2012

Even a cub astrologer would have seen a bolt of lightning coming—though perhaps not in such literal fashion. And s/he would have seen that Walker Church would be caught up, increasingly, in the turmoil of this time.

It’s written in its very foundation, or, more accurately, its dedication. Walker Church—the building certainly, but also the community centered on it—was dedicated on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1910.  Though there is great complexity in any  birth chart, as in any life represented thus, the obvious fact rooted in that date is that Walker’s Sun is in the sign of Aries, the initiator, at six degrees. Because it was Easter, it was after the Full Moon following the vernal equinox, but in this case the Full Moon was only the day before, and the Moon was with Jupiter/Zeus (lord of atmospheric phenomena) in Libra. There could be no better set of symbols for a congregation with a highly public profile and, in time, a social justice focus, a lightning rod for contentious issues of the day.

What now brings Walker to the fore is the epochal combination of Uranus the Awakener, the Disruptor, currently in Aries, and Pluto, governor of the powers of the underworld and the shadows, in the ruling class/business/government sign of Capricorn. These two planets in major configuration (in other signs) have accompanied periods of great social/economic/political upheaval, including the 1930s and 1960s. (The configuration is exact seven times between June 2012 and March 2015.) Uranus crossing the degree of Walker’s Sun (“the core and the heart,” as we recite each Sunday), from mid-April to early May 2012, announced the incipient new era. The bolt out of the roiling clouds, precipitating destruction of the old form, would have to await the activation of the degree of Mars, lord of the sign of Aries.

The question now, stirring in the heart and mind of each member and participant, is: What are we, together, to make of this moment and the urgent needs of our time?

[Although I was out-of-town, at UAC, when the fire occurred, several other members of Walker Church urged me to write something about the event from an astrological perspective. Having been contracted in 2002 to write a book on its history, I had done extensive research into its founding. I found no record of the time of the dedication, though I did learn that three worship services took place there that Easter Sunday, the first at 10:30 a.m. So I chose an arbitrary 9:00 a.m. time for dedication; lo and behold, feisty Mars appears right on the horizon. How appropriate.]
